Bath Basket

Transform an ordinary washcloth into a gorgeous decorative soap basket with a couple of simple seams and a few hand-sewn stitches.

We will show you how to form the washcloth into a basket shape, and how to embroider an elegant ribbon to wrap around the base. A sparkling beaded handle, a few ribbon flowers and a bow finish the basket perfectly.

Supplies needed:

**Washcloth

**1 1/2 inch-wide satin ribbon
**1/2 inch-wide satin ribbon (for decorative bow)
**Decorative ribbon flowers
**Assorted beads
**24-gauge bead wire
**Chain nose pliers
**Hot glue gun
**Heavy weight Timtex or semi-rigid interfacing
**Tear-away stabilizer
**Spray adhesive
**Air erase pen

**Needle and thread for some hand sewing

Designs Used:

First, fold the washcloth right sides together. We're working with a washcloth that is 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches.

Next, pin the long, open end to secure it in place. We want the opening in the top of the basket to be about 7 inches across (when lying flat on its side). Therefore, we marked in about 2 1/2 inches on both sides. This is where the seams will be sewn.

Sew a seam on each side, starting at each mark, and sewing in a straight line to the opposite side (folded side).

After the two seams have been sewn, cut the excess washcloth about 1/4 inch from the seams.

Next, to create a flat bottom for the basket, fold the bottom corners over to meet the side seams and sew in place with a needle and thread.

Turn the basket right side out.

Now that the basket has been assembled, we need to cut out "supports" for the insides that will hold up the basket. Set the basket onto the Timtex or other semi-rigid interfacing. Trace around the bottom of the basket and cut out the shape. This is the bottom inside of the basket.

Next, lay the basket flat on its side. Measure the width and height of the basket.

We need two shapes for each side of the basket. Measure and mark the dimensions on the Timtex and cut out the shapes.

Insert the bottom piece first by pressing it into the bottom of the basket. Insert the side pieces next. If any of the pieces are too large, they can be trimmed slightly for a better fit.

Now we will create the basket's handle. Bend and cut a piece of the bead wire into an arch that fits your basket. Allow about an inch of excess wire on each end.

Next, using the pliers, bend a small loop into the wire about an inch up from one end.

Then, add the beads, leaving about one inch of excess wire on the open end. When all the beads have been added, bend another loop at the open end to hold the beads in place.

To add the handle to the basket, make a line of hot glue along the inside seam of the basket.

Lay one end of the handle inside the seam and pinch the seam closed. To further secure the handle, glue the seam to the side of the basket by adding a line of glue to one side of the seam and pressing it to the inside of the basket. Glue the other end of the handle to the seam on the opposite side of the basket.

Next, the decorative ribbon will be embroidered. We will be embroidering the design twice to allow it to reach around the basket. Cut a piece of the tear-away stabilizer larger than your hoop. Give the stabilizer a quick shot of spray adhesive.

Lay the ribbon straight across the stabilizer and smooth in place. Do not cut the ribbon just yet. It will be sized and cut a bit later.

To find the center of the ribbon, measure the width of the ribbon and divide by two. With an air-erase pen, mark the center of the ribbon on both ends and connect the points by drawing a line.

Hoop the ribbon and stabilizer by aligning the line on the ribbon with the marks on the top portion of the hoop. To position the embroidery on the ribbon, print out a template of the design and align the horizontal axis lines on the template with the line on the ribbon. Poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the center point on the ribbon.

Add the hoop to the machine. Move the needle over the center point and...

...embroider the design.

When the design has finished sewing, unhoop the ribbon and remove the excess stabilizer. To continue sewing the design, cut another piece of tear-away stabilizer and give it a quick shot of spray adhesive. Lay the ribbon straight across the stabilizer with the end of the first embroidered design a couple of inches inside of the hooping area. Continue the line across the ribbon by aligning a ruler with the existing line and then drawing a new line.

Hoop the ribbon and stabilizer as you did before. Use the printed template to position the second design next to the first and mark the center point.

Add the hoop to the machine, move the needle over the center point and embroider the design.

When the second design is finished sewing , unhoop the ribbon and tear away the excess stabilizer. Next wrap the embroidered ribbon around the basket and cut to size.

Then, flip the basket to the front, align the center of the ribbon with the front of the basket and hot glue the ribbon into place.

Wrap the ends of the ribbon to the back of the basket and glue into place.

You can add embellishments like ribbon flowers and bows by hot gluing them to the ribbon or directly onto the basket.

Fill the basket with soap, lotion and other goodies to put together a really quick and great gift.
